He was shy at first, turning his face from me every time I looked at him…especially if it was through the lens of my camera. I think I scored a couple brownie points, though, when I took some bread out of my car for him to feed the ducks. Every time he threw a piece in, he ran to his mom and said “mom, I want more!” with a huge smile on his face. As the minutes passed on, he slowly became more comfortable around me and actually looked at my camera a few times.
In a lot of ways, Sam is just like any other 3 year old. Just like any other 3 year old, he could laugh and whine all in a single sentence. Just like any other 3 year old, he would both hug and strangle his sister within 30 seconds time. Just like any other 3 year old, he could spend hours on end feeding the ducks or playing with his cars. And just like any other 3 year old, he has a heart of gold that had the ability to melt me.
But Sam is not like any other 3 year old.
Born at 34 weeks, as a premie, Sam was quickly diagnosed with MMIHS. In his mother’s own words “We can’t feel bad for ourselves though because Sam is a miracle. Most children (like 99.99999999999999 percent) who have his syndrome needed massive organ transplants to live. So while Sam was given a few knocks in life, we are so grateful that he continues to live and grow.” Sam is a hero.
I was contacted by an organization called “Littlest Heroes” not too long ago about doing donation photo sessions for families who have children that have medical issues. As many of you know, I am really passionate about giving back and helping others. Sam was the first session I have been able to do, and it was so much fun. I met Kerri and Mark at Elizabeth Park in West Hartford, CT to do Sam’s portrait shoot, as well as getting some family pictures done. For those of you who have ever done portrait sessions of toddlers, you know that you can barely keep them still long enough to click the shutter button on your camera – never mind getting them to pose in a cute way, smile, and remain still all at the same time. It is an impossible feat. But that is the beauty of photographer toddlers and kids in general – they are so unpredictable and fun!
Meet Sam. (and his adorable twin sister Amelia!)

That’s the “not sure I like you yet” face.

Playing with his car.

Had to get a few of Amelia too! She was so excited to show me her “pretty dress for pictures.”

I love the shot of her smelling the roses!

Mommy and Amelia.

A couple family portrait shots amongst the rose bushes at Elizabeth park in West Hartford, CT.

This series is my favorite of the day. Especially the out takes (you won’t need clarification on which ones those are!)

Amelia loved posing in front of the camera.

Started with this…

…and in a matter of second went to this!….lol!

…and then back to this.
